Oxygen Delivery Devices: Nasal Cannula and Oxygen Masks

Oxygen therapy is a critical component in the treatment of patients experiencing respiratory distress or conditions that impair oxygenation. Two of the most commonly used devices for oxygen delivery are the nasal cannula and the oxygen mask. While both serve the purpose of delivering supplemental oxygen, they differ significantly in structure, comfort, oxygen delivery capacity, and suitability for various clinical scenarios.

Nasal Cannula

A nasal cannula is a lightweight, flexible tube that splits into two prongs designed to be inserted into the patient’s nostrils. The tubing is typically secured over the ears and under the chin to ensure stability.

The nasal cannula is favored for its comfort and convenience. Patients can speak, eat, and drink while wearing it, which makes it particularly suitable for long-term oxygen therapy and for patients requiring continuous, but not high, oxygen supplementation.

However, one limitation is that at higher flow rates, it can cause nasal dryness and discomfort, and it may not provide adequate oxygenation in cases of severe respiratory compromise.

Oxygen Masks

In contrast, an oxygen mask covers both the nose and mouth, forming a more sealed interface for oxygen delivery. These masks are usually made from plastic, rubber, or silicone and are connected to an oxygen source via tubing. Because they cover a

larger surface area, masks can deliver higher oxygen concentrations compared to nasal cannulas.

Choosing the Right Device

The choice between a nasal cannula and an oxygen mask depends on the patient’s clinical condition, required oxygen concentration, and comfort.

Nasal Cannula: Best for stable patients requiring low to moderate oxygen, especially when long-term use and comfort are priorities.

Oxygen Mask: Necessary for patients requiring higher oxygen concentrations, precise oxygen delivery,or emergency interventions.
